Himayatsagar Reservoir Water Release

Himayatsagar Reservoir is a major reservoir in Telangana and one of the twin reservoirs that supply drinking water to Hyderabad and Secunderabad. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board began releasing water from the reservoir on 28 June 2026 after rainfall increased inflows in the catchment area.

Himayatsagar Reservoir: Location and Purpose

Himayatsagar Reservoir is located near Hyderabad in Telangana and was built on the Musi River system. The reservoir works with Osman Sagar Reservoir to provide drinking water to the twin cities and to regulate floodwater during the monsoon season.

Reservoir Levels and Discharge

On 30 June 2026, the reservoir level stood at 1,761.70 feet against the Full Reservoir Level of 1,763.5 feet. The storage on the same date was 2.26 tmc ft against the total capacity of 2.521 tmc ft. The discharge was 651 cusecs downstream, while the reservoir received 150 cusecs of inflow.

Administrative Control and Safety Measures

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board manages the release operation at Himayatsagar Reservoir. Officials from the Hyderabad and Rangareddy district administrations, HYDRAA, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, and the police department were placed on alert during the release.
