Gujarat Expands Shramik Annapurna Meal Scheme
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated 101 food distribution centres under the Shramik Annapurna Yojana on 16 October 2026. The centres operate across 28 districts, taking the scheme’s total network to 372 centres.
Coverage and Centre Network
The 101 new centres are expected to add capacity for 10,000 meals a day. The expansion is intended to provide daily meals to around 45,000 construction workers and their family members. The inauguration took place alongside a Seva Daan programme organised under the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Seva Sankalp Abhiyan. The scheme also provides doorstep meal delivery at construction sites where more than 50 workers opt for the service. Approximately 27 lakh meals have been distributed through this delivery facility.
Meal and Delivery Provisions
Workers and their family members can obtain meals for ₹5 per person. A standard meal comprises rotis, vegetables, dal, rice, pickle, chillies and jaggery. Sukhdi and sheera are served as sweets once a week.
Scheme Timeline and Subsidy
The Shramik Annapurna Yojana was first launched in 2017 by then-Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, with meals priced at ₹10. The scheme was relaunched in October 2022, when the meal price was reduced to ₹5 per person. As of 18 October 2023, approximately 50 lakh workers in Gujarat had benefited from the Annapurna Scheme. The government provided a subsidy of ₹37 per meal at that time. In November 2023, Bhupendra Patel inaugurated 155 additional centres under the Shramik Annapurna Yojana.
