Government Approves ₹50,000 Loan for FCV Tobacco Growers

The Government of India approved a one-time interest-free loan of ₹50,000 per barn for Flue-Cured Virginia (FCV) tobacco growers in Andhra Pradesh on 25 September 2026. The assistance is part of the Interest-Free Working Capital Assistance Scheme of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and is meant for about 44,000 growers.

Flue-Cured Virginia Tobacco

Flue-Cured Virginia tobacco is a commercial tobacco variety cured in barns with controlled heat and airflow. Andhra Pradesh is one of the major FCV tobacco-growing States in India, and the crop is marketed through auction platforms regulated by the Tobacco Board.

Scheme Features

The approved assistance provides ₹50,000 per barn as a one-time interest-free loan. The total financial outlay for the intervention is estimated at about ₹220 crore, and the amount will be transferred directly to farmers through Direct Benefit Transfer.

Crop Marketing and Auction System

The 2025-26 FCV tobacco crop season began with auctions on 25 March 2026. By 25 September 2026, around 100 million kg of FCV tobacco had been auctioned, and the Centre permitted the sale of excess and unauthorised FCV tobacco through Tobacco Board auction platforms in Andhra Pradesh.
