Gangavati women’s and children’s hospital launches mammography and midwifery care units
The Gangavati Women and Children’s Hospital in Karnataka has opened mammography and midwifery-led care units. MLA Gali Janardhana Reddy inaugurated the services.
New diagnostic and maternity services
The hospital is described as Karnataka’s first taluk hospital with a mammography unit. Mammography uses breast imaging to support early detection of breast cancer.
The midwifery-led care unit is Karnataka’s second, after Vanivilas Hospital in Bengaluru, and the first such unit at a taluk-level hospital in India. It is intended to provide safe delivery care, support maternal and newborn health, and offer medical guidance to pregnant women.
Important Facts for Exams
- Mammography imaging: Mammography uses low-energy X-rays, usually around 30 kVp, to examine breast tissue for diagnostic assessment or screening.
- Breast compression: During mammography, parallel-plate compression evens breast thickness, improving image quality while reducing scatter, radiation dose and motion blur.
- Midwifery care model: Midwifery-led continuity assigns primary responsibility for ongoing care to one or more midwives, supported by consultation and referral links with other providers.
