Sagar University and Bundelkhand Medical College sign disease-research MoU

Dr Harisingh Gour Central University in Sagar and Bundelkhand Medical College signed a memorandum of understanding on 3 November 2026 to jointly investigate diseases prevalent in the Bundelkhand region.

Research focus and facilities

Students and faculty from both institutions will work together to examine whether local disease patterns are linked to genetic factors, diet or other causes. The causes have not yet been established. The research will also explore prevention, medicines, treatments and other medical options.

Diseases identified for study include kidney disease, cancer, tuberculosis and thalassaemia, alongside viral and bacterial illnesses. The university’s integrative genomics facility is expected to support genetic studies. Bundelkhand Medical College’s multidisciplinary research facility will also support the collaboration.

Important Facts for Exams

  • MoU status: An MoU is often used when parties do not intend a legal commitment or cannot create a legally enforceable agreement.
  • Thalassaemia genetics: Thalassaemia is an inherited haemoglobin disorder caused by reduced or absent production of alpha- or beta-globin chains; severity varies with the affected genes.
  • Tuberculosis transmission: Tuberculosis is caused by bacteria in the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and usually spreads through airborne particles; infection may remain latent without symptoms or infectiousness.
  • Genetic association and causation: A genetic association does not by itself establish causation: linked variants may merely mark the causal change, requiring further functional or epidemiological evidence.
