Coal India Moves into Iron Ore Mining in Diversification Push

Coal India Limited (CIL), a Maharatna public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Coal, became the preferred bidder for the Gadadharpur Iron Ore Block in Keonjhar district of Odisha on 6 August 2026. The block is CIL’s first iron ore asset and was secured through a competitive auction conducted by the Government of Odisha.

Coal India Limited and Mineral Diversification

Coal India Limited was incorporated in 1975 and remains India’s largest coal producer, with a dominant share in domestic coal output. The company has expanded beyond coal through participation in auctions for minerals linked to steel, energy transition, and industrial supply chains.

Gadadharpur Iron Ore Block: Key Facts

The Gadadharpur Iron Ore Block covers 265.05 hectares and is located in the Keonjhar district, which is one of Odisha’s major mineral-bearing regions. The block is at the G3 exploration stage under the United Nations Framework Classification system used in mineral resource assessment.

CIL quoted an auction premium of 114.05% of the value of minerals dispatched to secure the block. The resource estimate for the block has been placed at 288 million tonnes in one filing, while other estimates based on government and consultancy data place it at 258 million tonnes.

Mining Auction Terms and Regulatory Stages

Under Indian mining law, a preferred bidder must complete statutory clearances before being declared the successful bidder. CIL has one year to complete the required regulatory clearances and three years to execute the mining lease deed.

The G3 stage requires further core drilling and closer-spaced sampling before a mine can move towards detailed resource estimation and commercial development. Iron ore blocks in India are auctioned under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, and the Mineral Auction Rules notified by the Union and state governments.

Important Facts for Exams

  • Odisha is one of India’s leading iron ore-producing states and has major mineral belts in Keonjhar, Sundargarh, and Mayurbhanj districts.
  • NMDC Ltd. is India’s largest iron ore producer in the public sector.
  • G3 exploration is an early-stage mineral exploration category used before detailed feasibility work.
  • India has set a target of 300 million tonnes of steelmaking capacity by 2030.

Industrial and Strategic Context

Iron ore is the principal raw material for steel production, and domestic mining supports India’s steel and infrastructure sectors. Coal India’s entry into iron ore places it among public sector companies active in non-coal mineral development.
