Tamil Nadu Raises Paddy and Sugarcane Procurement Incentives

Tamil Nadu announced higher state procurement incentives for paddy and sugarcane on 10 August 2026 during a session of the State Assembly in Chennai under Rule 110. The revised rates apply from 1 September 2026, which is the start of the upcoming procurement season.

Paddy Procurement in Tamil Nadu

For fine-grade or Grade-A paddy, the state incentive has been fixed at ₹289 per quintal. The total effective procurement price for Grade-A paddy has been set at ₹2,750 per quintal.

For common-grade paddy, the total procurement price has been fixed at ₹2,600 per quintal. The incentive amount for common-grade paddy was reported in different figures, including ₹159, ₹156 and ₹150 per quintal, while the total procurement price remained the same.

Sugarcane Pricing and FRP

For sugarcane, Tamil Nadu introduced a special incentive of ₹709.50 per tonne. This amount is added to the Central government’s Fair and Remunerative Price of ₹3,290.50 per metric tonne.

The combined payout for sugarcane farmers in Tamil Nadu has reached ₹4,000 per tonne. The Fair and Remunerative Price, or FRP, is the statutory minimum price fixed by the Union government for sugarcane under the Sugarcane Control Order.

Procurement Support and Related Terms

Procurement incentives are state-level additions to the prices paid for notified agricultural produce. In Tamil Nadu, paddy procurement is linked to the public distribution system and sugarcane procurement is linked to sugar mills and cane pricing arrangements.

The announcement was made by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay in the State Assembly. The statement was made under Rule 110, which permits the Tamil Nadu government to make policy announcements in the Assembly without prior notice.
