Tamil Nadu announces government model schools renamed Vetri Schools
On 3 November 2026, Tamil Nadu Model Schools member secretary Sudhan announced that the state’s government model schools would be renamed Vetri Schools.
School facilities and guidance
The scheme began in the 2021–22 academic year under the previous DMK government, with one model school established in each of Tamil Nadu’s 38 districts. It provides students with education, food and accommodation. Schools also have smart classrooms, digital technology, computer and internet facilities, equipped laboratories, skill training and sports grounds.
Students receive entrance-exam coaching for admissions to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs), as well as the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). The schools also provide guidance on higher education.
Important Facts for Exams
- Shared council: Each IIT operates autonomously but is linked to the others through the IIT Council, which oversees their administration.
- Curriculum autonomy: IITs can set curricula and adapt to changing educational requirements; the government has no direct control over these internal policy decisions.
- Tamil Nadu school quota: Tamil Nadu provides a 7.5% horizontal reservation in professional-course admissions for eligible pupils who studied classes 6–12 in government schools.
- NEET counselling distinction: Exam administration and seat counselling are separate: the National Testing Agency conducts NEET-UG, while designated central and state authorities conduct admissions counselling.
