Prafulla Chaki and Revolutionary Action
Prafulla Chandra Chaki was an early twentieth-century Indian revolutionary who fought against British colonial rule through direct armed action. Associated with the Jugantar group and the Anushilan Samiti in Bengal, he played a central role in the 1908 Muzaffarpur Bomb Case alongside Khudiram Bose. His choice to sacrifice his own life rather than submit to colonial captivity turned him into an enduring martyr of the anti-imperialist movement.
Early Life and Entry into Revolutionary Politics
Academic Foundation and Influence
- Prafulla Chandra Chaki was born on December 10, 1888, in Bihar village of Bogra district (now in Bangladesh).
- He studied at Bogra Zilla School, where he developed strong anti-colonial views during his youth.
- Colonial authorities expelled him from Bogra Zilla School for participating in student demonstrations against the 1905 Partition of Bengal.
- He subsequently moved to Rangpur and joined the Rangpur National School, an institution founded during the Swadeshi Movement to provide indigenous education free from British oversight.
Association with Jugantar and Anushilan Samiti
- In Rangpur, Prafulla joined the local branch of the Anushilan Samiti and came under the influence of leaders like Ishan Chandra Chakravarty.
- He moved to Calcutta and joined the Jugantar group, an inner revolutionary circle led by Barindra Kumar Ghosh.
- He received training in physical culture, martial arts, firearms, and explosives at secret revolutionary centers in Bengal.
- In early 1908, Barindra Kumar Ghosh selected Prafulla for high-risk missions targeting senior British officials.
The Muzaffarpur Bomb Case (1908)
Mission Against Douglas Kingsford
- Douglas Kingsford, the Chief Presidency Magistrate of Calcutta, incurred the wrath of nationalist revolutionaries for ordering public floggings and harsh prison terms for young freedom fighters.
- The Jugantar group passed a death sentence on Kingsford, prompting the colonial administration to transfer him to Muzaffarpur as a District Judge for safety.
- Barindra Kumar Ghosh assigned Prafulla Chaki (operating under the alias Dinesh Chandra Roy) and Khudiram Bose to execute Kingsford in Muzaffarpur.
Execution of the Attack
- Prafulla Chaki and Khudiram Bose reached Muzaffarpur in April 1908, staying at a local dharamshala to observe Kingsford’s daily routines.
- On the night of April 30, 1908, they targeted a carriage leaving the European Club, believing Kingsford was inside.
- They threw a bomb crafted by Hem Chandra Kanungo into the carriage, which completely destroyed the vehicle.
- The carriage actually carried the wife and daughter of British barrister Pringle Kennedy, both of whom died from injuries, while Kingsford escaped unhurt.
Escape, Confrontation, and Martyrdom
Flight Toward Mokama
- After the attack, the two revolutionaries fled in separate directions to evade police checkpoints.
- Prafulla Chaki changed his clothes, took a train from Samastipur, and traveled toward Mokama.
- On the train, a fellow passenger, British Indian police Sub-Inspector Nandalal Banerjee, grew suspicious of Prafulla’s appearance and behavior.
- Banerjee alerted local police authorities at Mokama Ghat railway station to arrest him upon arrival.
Final Stand at Mokama Ghat
- On May 1, 1908, as Prafulla Chaki stepped off the train at Mokama Ghat station, Nandalal Banerjee and police constables attempted to detain him.
- Prafulla drew his revolver and fired at the police officers in an effort to break through the cordon.
- Realizing that capture was inevitable and refusing to face British trial or interrogation, Prafulla shot himself in the head with his own revolver.
- He attained martyrdom on May 1, 1908, at nineteen years of age.
