NTPC Simhadri to Host Iron-Air Battery Pilot

NTPC Simhadri to Host Iron-Air Battery Pilot

An indigenous iron-air battery system will undergo a utility-scale pilot evaluation at NTPC’s Simhadri Thermal Power Station in Andhra Pradesh. The project involves Chennai-based deep-tech startup Meine Electric and the Atal Incubation Centre–Anna University, with the trial focused on Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES).

Iron-Air Battery Technology

Iron-air batteries are electrochemical storage systems that use iron, air, and water as the main materials. The technology belongs to the broader class of long-duration batteries designed to store electricity for extended periods and release it over many hours.

Fast Charge Long Discharge System

Meine Electric’s proprietary Fast Charge Long Discharge (FCLD) system uses a six-hour charging cycle and an 18-hour discharging cycle. The system is designed for utility-scale applications where grid storage requires long discharge durations and repeated operational cycles.

Pilot Evaluation at Simhadri

The pilot at NTPC Simhadri will assess technical performance, operational reliability, and suitability under real-world utility conditions. Under the partnership framework, Meine Electric will handle development, system integration, and performance monitoring of the battery system.

Important Facts for Exams

  • NTPC stands for National Thermal Power Corporation, which is India’s largest power utility by installed capacity.
  • Long-Duration Energy Storage refers to storage systems that can discharge electricity for many hours, often beyond four hours.
  • Iron is one of the most abundant metals in the Earth’s crust and is used in several industrial and energy applications.
  • The India Energy Storage Alliance is an industry body associated with energy storage policy and market development in India.

Validation and Industry Position

The battery technology has been independently tested for capacity retention and electrochemical stability by Customized Energy Solutions, the parent company of the India Energy Storage Alliance. Industry references place Meine Electric as the first company in the Asia-Pacific region and the third globally to pioneer iron-air LDES technology.

Grid Storage Context

Grid-scale storage systems are used to balance electricity supply and demand in power systems with variable renewable energy. Long-duration storage technologies are relevant for 24×7 power supply, peak load management, and grid flexibility.
