Kimi Antonelli Becomes Formula One’s Youngest Champion

On Sunday, 1 November 2026, Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, aged 20, became the youngest champion in Formula One history. He secured the title by finishing third in the Mexico City Grand Prix, with four races remaining. His lead over teammate George Russell and Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton became unassailable.

Race result and championship record

Max Verstappen won the Mexico City Grand Prix for the sixth time. Hamilton finished second and Antonelli third. The race was red-flagged on lap 46 after Valtteri Bottas crashed into a wall following right-side suspension problems; Bottas left the car unaided.

Antonelli became the first Italian Formula One champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953. Sebastian Vettel had held the previous youngest-champion record, winning at age 23 in 2010. Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali said Italy had waited 73 years for the title and that Antonelli’s name had joined the sport’s legends.

Important Facts for Exams

  • Championship scoring: Formula One Grand Prix points determine two annual titles: one for drivers and another for constructors, the latter awarded to teams.
  • Entry requirements: Formula One drivers need an FIA Super Licence, and championship races must use circuits holding the FIA’s highest, Grade One rating.
  • Aerodynamic downforce: Formula One cars generate most aerodynamic downforce through front and rear wings and underbody tunnels, enabling high cornering speeds.
