ISRO, ESA Extend Space Cooperation Until 2032
The Indian Space Research Organisation and the European Space Agency have extended their Cooperative Agreement until 8 January 2032. The extension was formalised through an exchange of letters in Paris on 10 September 2026 during the International Space Summit.
ISRO-ESA Cooperation Framework
The original cooperation agreement between ISRO and ESA came into force in January 2002. The agreement created a formal framework for collaboration in space activities between the two agencies.
The renewed arrangement covers human and robotic exploration, space weather, and sustainable outer space activities. ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan and ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher signed the extension documents.
Areas of Joint Work
ISRO and ESA have worked together for more than two decades in Earth observation, satellite navigation, space science, and mission operations support. These areas form part of the wider international cooperation between the two space agencies.
In March 2026, the two agencies also signed an agreement for joint calibration, validation activities, and scientific studies for Earth observation missions. Calibration and validation are standard processes used to verify satellite data and instrument performance.
Human Space Exploration and Space Science
The two agencies signed a Joint Statement of Intent on human exploration in 2025. Human exploration refers to missions involving astronauts, while robotic exploration refers to spacecraft and probes operated without crew.
Space weather is a scientific field that studies solar activity and its effects on Earth and space-based systems. Sustainable outer space activities include practices related to safe and responsible use of the space environment.
Important Facts for Exams
