India’s Rooftop Solar Capacity Reaches 20.8 GW

India’s rooftop solar capacity reached 20.8 GW in 2025 after 7.1 GW of new installations, which marked a 123% year-on-year increase. The residential sector accounted for 76% of annual rooftop solar installations in 2025, and the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana remained the main policy support for the segment.

Rooftop Solar in India

Rooftop solar refers to photovoltaic systems installed on the roofs of buildings for electricity generation. These systems are used in homes, commercial buildings, institutions, and industrial premises, and they are connected either to the grid or to battery storage systems.

PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana

The Union Cabinet approved the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana on 29 February 2024 with an outlay of ₹75,021 crore. The scheme targets rooftop solar installation in one crore households by FY 2026-27 and provides for up to 300 units of free electricity per month. As of 9 December 2025, 1,945,758 rooftop solar systems had been installed under the scheme, covering 2,435,196 households. Assam had 63,887 rooftop solar installations under the scheme on the same date.

State-wise Deployment and Utility-Led Aggregation

Maharashtra accounted for 16% of new rooftop solar deployments in 2025, while Gujarat accounted for nearly 16% and Uttar Pradesh for 15%. The Utility-Led Aggregation model received approval for over 1.3 million rooftop solar systems in May 2026 across 10 states and Union Territories. Rooftop solar installations under the Utility-Led Aggregation model began in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu by May 2026. Bihar, Kerala, Jammu and Kashmir, and Rajasthan submitted proposals to join the Utility-Led Aggregation programme in May 2026.
