Indian Railways Becomes World’s Second-Most Electrified Network

Indian Railways reached 99.6% electrification of its broad gauge network as of 22 July 2026. This level placed it as the world’s second-most electrified large railway system, after Switzerland, which has 100% electrification.

Railway Electrification in India

Railway electrification refers to the use of electric traction for train operations through overhead equipment or other electric supply systems. Indian Railways has expanded electrification across trunk routes, branch lines, and freight corridors under a phased network-wide programme.

Route Kilometres Electrified After 2014

Between 2014 and 2026, Indian Railways electrified 48,072 route kilometres. In the six decades before 2014, Indian Railways electrified 21,801 route kilometres. The electrification pace increased sharply after 2014 across major railway divisions and project categories.

Diesel Use and Energy Transition

Diesel consumption for train operations fell from 293 crore litres in 2015-16 to 108 crore litres in 2024-25. The reduction was nearly 185 crore litres, and it lowered dependence on imported fuel for railway traction.
