IIT Kharagpur Launches AI Tutor for GATE and JAM

On 12 October 2026, IIT Kharagpur launched the NDLI-FERMI AI Tutor and a free online preparation platform for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and the Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM). Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar inaugurated both initiatives at IIT Kharagpur’s Research Park in Rajarhat, Kolkata, during the institute’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

Artificial Intelligence in Learning

The NDLI-FERMI AI Tutor was developed by IIT Kharagpur in collaboration with Fermi AI and integrated with the National Digital Library of India (NDLI). It provides personalised academic assistance at no cost to registered NDLI users. The tutor uses guided learning through questions, hints and contextual explanations rather than providing only direct answers. Its “Scan & Ask” function allows learners to submit problems in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology. The tool can assist with identifying mistakes and improving problem-solving approaches.

National Digital Library of India

The National Digital Library of India is sponsored by the Union Ministry of Education and provides access to digital learning resources. It serves more than one crore learners and hosts over 130 million learning resources. The NDLI platform brings together educational material in digital form for users across different subjects and levels. Integration of the AI Tutor gives registered users access to the learning assistant through the NDLI ecosystem.

GATE and JAM Examinations

The free online preparation platform uses IIT Kharagpur’s academic expertise and digital resources to support GATE and JAM aspirants. It is intended to provide structured preparation, including for students in rural areas and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. GATE is an examination used for postgraduate admissions and recruitment in several public-sector organisations. It is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology. JAM is an entrance examination for postgraduate science programmes at participating institutions and is conducted by IITs on a rotational basis.
