IIHT SUTRA 2026 Held as First National Conclave

IIHT SUTRA 2026 was held on 12 August 2026 at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi as the first National Conclave of the Indian Institutes of Handloom Technology (IIHTs). The event was organised by the Ministry of Textiles through the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handlooms) and brought together institutional, academic, and industry stakeholders linked to handloom education.

Indian Institutes of Handloom Technology

The Indian Institutes of Handloom Technology are specialised institutions under the handloom education framework in India. The conclave referred to 6 Central IIHTs and 5 State IIHTs, which were discussed as centres of excellence for training, research, and skill development in the handloom sector.

Theme and Institutional Focus

The official theme of the conclave was “IIHTs: Weaving the Future of the Indian Handloom Sector – Educate • Innovate • Transform”. The programme focused on technical innovation, modern design upgrades, and stronger industry linkages for weavers and artisans.

MoUs and Academic Linkages

Three Memoranda of Understanding were signed with Grasim Industries Limited, the Indian Institute of Management Sambalpur, and the Northern India Textile Research Association. These MoUs covered research, faculty development, and internships for students and institutions associated with the handloom sector.

Exhibition, Awards, and Publications

The conclave included an IIHT Exhibition and Theme Pavilion with student innovations, institutional achievements, and live handloom demonstrations. Gold Medals and Rank Certificates were presented to high-performing IIHT students, and winners of Handloom Hackathon 2.0 were also honoured.

Related Institutional Figures

Smt. Neelam Shami Rao, Secretary of Textiles, and Dr. M. Beena, Development Commissioner for Handlooms, attended the conclave. The Ministry also launched the promotional film “Weaving India’s Handloom Future” and the alumni publication “Handloom Change Makers”.
