ICMR Transfers Indigenous Medical Technologies for Commercialisation

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) transferred indigenous medical technologies for commercialisation through its Medical Innovations Patent Mitra initiative. On 21 July 2026, ICMR licensed three biomedical technologies to Indian pharmaceutical and vaccine manufacturers, including Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd. and Biological E Ltd.

Medical Innovations Patent Mitra

Medical Innovations Patent Mitra is an ICMR initiative for technology transfer and commercialisation of publicly funded biomedical research. The initiative connects research institutions with industry partners for product development, licensing, and scale-up.

SHetA2 and Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia

SHetA2 is a novel anti-HPV therapeutic candidate developed for Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN), a precancerous condition of the cervix. ICMR licensed SHetA2 to Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd. for further development and commercial use. SHetA2 was developed through collaboration between Dr. Showket Hussain of ICMR-National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research (ICMR-NICPR) and Dr. Doris M. Benbrook of the Stephenson Cancer Center, University of Oklahoma, USA. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a major cause of cervical cancer, and CIN is classified as a precursor lesion in cervical disease.

Enteric Bacterial Vaccine Technologies

ICMR licensed two next-generation vaccine technologies against enteric bacterial infections to Biological E Ltd. These technologies were developed at ICMR-National Institute for Research in Bacterial Infections (ICMR-NIRBI) in Kolkata. One technology is a fusion protein-based typhoid vaccine targeting Salmonella typhi. The second is a recombinant vaccine designed for broader protection against Salmonella typhi, Salmonella paratyphi, and Shigella infections. Typhoid fever is caused by Salmonella typhi, while paratyphoid fever is associated with Salmonella paratyphi. Shigella species are bacterial pathogens linked to bacillary dysentery.

On 25 May 2026, ICMR conducted a biomedical innovation and technology transfer event involving 41 public health technologies. The transferred technologies included glycoconjugate and recombinant vaccines for typhoid and paratyphoid, along with diagnostic technologies for Japanese Encephalitis, Tuberculosis, and Mpox. These transfers form part of India’s public health research ecosystem, which includes national institutes, licensed industry partners, and product development pathways for diagnostics, vaccines, and therapeutics.
