Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee National Institute of Water and Sanitation (SPM-NIWAS)

The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has given ex post facto approval for renaming the National Centre for Drinking Water, Sanitation and Quality in Joka, Kolkata, to the “Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee National Institute of Water and Sanitation” (SPM-NIWAS). The Institute has been set up on 8.72 acres of land at Joka, Diamond Harbor Road, Kolkata, West Bengal. This institute was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2022.

Purpose of the Institute

The Institute is envisioned as a premier institute to develop capacities in states/UTs in the field of public health engineering, drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene through training programs. Such capacities are envisaged not only for the front-line workforce engaged in the implementation of the Swachh Bharat Mission and Jal Jeevan Mission but also for representatives of local bodies, both rural and urban.

Infrastructure and Training

To facilitate this, suitable infrastructure has been developed, including training infrastructure, a research and development block, and a residential complex. Working and miniature models of Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) technologies have also been installed to facilitate training at the Institute.

Naming of the Institute

Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, one of the most deserving sons of West Bengal and a front-runner in national integration, inspiration for industrialization, was also an eminent scholar and academician and the youngest Vice Chancellor of the University of Calcutta. Naming the Institute after Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s name is intended to inspire all stakeholders to honor him by adopting his values of honesty, integrity, and commitment in the work ethic of the Institute.

The Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee National Institute of Water and Sanitation (SPM-NIWAS) is set to become a premier institution for training and development in the field of public health engineering, drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene. The Institute is dedicated to the memory of a great son of West Bengal and a leader in national integration, and aims to inspire all stakeholders to adopt his values of honesty, integrity, and commitment in their work.
