Ahom Dynasty Capital Ensemble Enters UNESCO Tentative List

The Rangpur-Sivasagar Historical Ensemble in Assam has been added to UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List. India’s Permanent Mission to UNESCO submitted the nomination dossier on 19 June 2026 under UNESCO cultural criteria (iii) and (iv).

Ahom Dynasty and the Brahmaputra Valley

The Ahom dynasty ruled the Brahmaputra Valley from 1228 to 1826. The dynasty established its political and ceremonial centre in the Sivasagar region of present-day Assam. The nominated ensemble represents the pre-modern capital landscape associated with Ahom rule.

Key Monuments in the Ensemble

The nominated property includes several Ahom-era structures and water bodies. Rang Ghar is identified as Asia’s oldest surviving amphitheatre. Talatal Ghar is a multi-storeyed palace complex linked with Ahom military architecture. The ensemble also includes the Namdang Stone Bridge and the large tanks of Sivasagar, Joysagar, and Gaurisagar.

UNESCO Tentative List and Indian Properties

UNESCO’s Tentative List is the inventory of properties that a State Party may nominate for the World Heritage List in the future. With the addition of the Rangpur-Sivasagar Historical Ensemble and three other Indian properties, India’s Tentative List rose to 73 properties. The other three additions are the Colonial Penal Settlement of the Andaman Islands, the Nicobarese Cultural Continuity in the Central Group of Nicobar Islands, and the Painted Haveli Towns of Shekhawati.

Charaideo Moidams are the royal burial mounds of the Ahom dynasty in Assam. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2024 and is linked to the dynasty’s funerary landscape.
