Tamil Nadu Rolls Out AI Assistive Devices Scheme

On 29 October 2026, the Tamil Nadu government announced assistance for persons with disabilities to obtain modern assistive devices, including AI-based aids. A broader first phase has an allocation of Rs. 125 crore. The specific AI-assisted devices scheme will cover 1,000 beneficiaries, with a budget of Rs. 3 crore.

Devices and eligibility

Covered equipment includes sports prostheses, electrically operated upper-limb prostheses, cochlear implant batteries and beds with commode facilities. The government will meet 50% of the cost, subject to a maximum of Rs. 30,000. Preference will go to students with disabilities and persons below 50 years of age.

A separate Rs. 4-crore programme will provide specially designed petrol scooters or battery-powered equipment with coupling wheels to 400 persons of short stature. Priority will go to students over 18; remaining scooters will be allotted to working and self-employed persons. Petrol-scooter recipients must be aged 18–65, have short stature and possess good hand strength. A committee comprising the District Collector, District Disabled Welfare Officer and Regional Transport Officer will select beneficiaries. The Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation will procure the equipment.

Application and administration

Both schemes require a Unique Disability ID card. Applicants must seek the concession within 60 days of purchase. The announcements followed the Social Welfare Minister’s August 2026 Assembly speech on demands for grants and a subsequent departmental order. Ajay Yadav was appointed State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities.
