SEBI Partners with BHASHINI to Expand Regional-Language Services
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Digital India BHASHINI Division (DIBD) in New Delhi on 3 November 2026. The agreement aims to make SEBI’s services and financial information more accessible to investors in regional Indian languages.
Language tools and implementation
SEBI Whole-Time Member Sandip Pradhan and DIBD Chief Executive Officer Amitabh Nag signed the MoU. SEBI will use BHASHINI’s language translation APIs, models and tools, including Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), Text-to-Speech (TTS), Machine Translation and Optical Character Recognition (OCR).
The collaboration will also support the enhancement of BHASHINI’s language models with securities-market terminology. The MoU took effect upon signing. SEBI has not announced when specific multilingual services will become available to the public.
Institutional structure
DIBD functions as an independent division under the Digital India Corporation, a Section 8 not-for-profit company established by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
Important Facts for Exams
- ASR conversion: BHASHINI’s Automatic Speech Recognition converts spoken language into text or other interpretable forms, supporting voice-based access.
- OCR input: Optical Character Recognition converts text in document images into machine-encoded text, making image-based material available for digital processing.
- Domain adaptation: Machine translation can be customised for technical or official texts, which can produce more stable results than general-purpose translation.
