Hantavirus Outbreak on Atlantic Cruise Ship
A suspected hantavirus outbreak on the Dutch-flagged cruise ship MV Hondius in the Atlantic Ocean caused three deaths and at least three other illnesses by 3 May 2026. One case was laboratory-confirmed, and five other cases remained suspected, while the ship was docked in Praia, the capital of Cape Verde.
Hantavirus: Basic Facts
Hantaviruses are a group of viruses that can cause hantavirus disease in humans. In the Americas, some hantaviruses cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, while in Europe and Asia they are linked with haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome.
MV Hondius and Voyage Route
The MV Hondius is a passenger cruise ship operated by Oceanwide Expeditions. The vessel departed from Argentina about three weeks before the outbreak and had a planned route covering Antarctica, the Falkland Islands, and the Canary Islands in Spain. About 150 tourists and around 70 crew members were onboard during the incident. The ship is registered under the Dutch flag, which is used for vessels operating under the maritime laws of the Netherlands.
Public Health Response and Medical Evacuation
The World Health Organization is facilitating the medical evacuation of two symptomatic passengers and is carrying out a public health risk assessment. South Africa’s Department of Health stated that one 70-year-old man died on the ship, his body was removed in Saint Helena, and his wife later died in a South African hospital. One British national is in intensive care in a Johannesburg hospital after falling ill near Ascension Island. Cape Verdean authorities had not approved disembarkation for passengers needing medical care, and local health officials assessed two symptomatic individuals who were reportedly crew members.

Maritime and Health Terms
Cruise ships operate under international maritime rules and often carry passengers across multiple jurisdictions. Public health authorities use laboratory confirmation, case tracing, and evacuation protocols during outbreaks on ships.
