The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has recently elected Israel to chair its Legal Committee, also known as the sixth Committee, for the first time in the world body’s 71-year history. The Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon has won the chairmanship of the UN’s legal affairs committee with 109 votes from the 193 member states. The legal Committee overseas UN activities related to international laws. The UN’s five other standing committees oversee the areas of disarmament, economic and financial issues, human rights, decolonization and the UN budget.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has recently introduced a new scheme “Scheme for Sustainable Structuring of Stressed Assets (S4A)” for resolution of bad loans of large projects. The S4A will cover those projects which have started commercial operations and have outstanding loan of over Rs.500 crore. The purpose of the S4A is to strengthen the lenders’ ability to deal with stressed assets and put real assets back on track by providing an avenue for reworking the financial structure of entities facing genuine difficulties. The scheme is an optional framework for resolution of large stressed accounts.

The US Embassy in Gambian capital Banjul has reopened for normal operations after the Gambian government redeployed police guards it withdrew last week. Though, the Gambian and US authorities have not explained the circumstances leading to the redeployment of the police guards. The dispute comes in the midst of controversy over Gambia’s arrest and trial of a US citizen who was under arrest while visiting relatives in the country. .
