Notes:
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Finance, the government will soon issue a commemorative coin of Rs 100 denomination to mark the birth centenary of Jawaharlal Darda.
Born in 1923, he was a former Congress leader and founder of the Lokmat group of newspapers. The successful businessman and also served as a Minister in Maharashtra for several terms. He passed away in 1997.

Despite being the second largest coal producer in the world, India in 2021-22 -till January- imported around 173.32 million tonnes of coal.
Several states across the country are undergoing long power cuts, as hotter temperatures pushed the electricity demand, triggering a major power crisis. According to a report, electricity supply fell short of demand by 1.88 billion units, or 1.6%, during April.

Ayushman Bharat Yojana, the government’s flagship healthcare scheme was started by PM Narendra Modi on 30 April 2018. Since then, 30 April is celebrated as Ayushman Bharat Diwas across the country.
It aims to spread awareness among the people in rural areas about the healthcare scheme. The scheme was started along the lines of universal health coverage, with the aim of meeting the UN SDG)3- ‘health and well-being for all’. India has operationalised 75,532 AB-Health and Wellness Centres (HCW) and is on track to functionalise 1.5 lakh HWCs by December 2022.

Basaveshwara, also known as Basavanna, was a 12th-century Indian philosopher, poet and social reformer. He spread social awareness through his poetry, known as Vachanaas.
The birth anniversary celebrations of 12th century reformer Basaveshwara is celebrated as ‘Basava Jayanti’ across the state of Karnataka with processions. This year, both Basawa Jayanti and Eid fell on the same day, and members of the Muslim and Hindu communities came together to celebrate the festivals as “Harmony Day”.

The Odisha State ST and SC development department signed an MoU with the Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC), Bhubaneswar, to set up a tribal health observatory (TriHOb).
This is said to be the first in the country, for ensuring equity in tribal health in Odisha. TriHOb will establish a repository on the health of tribal population of Odisha. Odisha Tribal Family Health Survey was also launched.

In the annual Test rankings released by International Cricket Council (ICC), India under new captain Rohit Sharma finished the 2021-22 season as the world’s number one ranked T20 team.
New Zealand finished the last season as the world No.1 ODI team while Australia topped the list in the Test Cricket. It has also increased their lead over second-placed India from one to nine rating points. Pakistan overtook England to fifth position in the ICC Men’s Test Team Rankings.

World Health Organization (WHO) marks May 5 every year as ‘World Hand Hygiene Day’, to encourage people to clean hands at the right times with the right products.
This year, the Campaign theme is “A health care “quality and safety climate or culture” that values hand hygiene and infection prevention and control” and the Slogan is “Unite for safety: clean your hands”.

The UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) has said that it is in discussions with India on procurement of wheat, as countries face food security challenges amid the Russia-Ukraine war.
World Food Program, IMF, World Bank recently encouraged governments not to put export bans on staple food grains. India has committed to supplying 50,000 tonnes of wheat grain to Afghanistan, which it has already started.

The Ministry of Electronics and IT launched five National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NEILIT).
North East Capacity Building (NECB) 2.0 Project was also launched for training in digital skill sets and industry-demanding technologies for people in the North-East states. The event was held at the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NEILIT), Dimapur.

Notes:
In the India leg of the annual Global Backyard Bird Count (GBCC) coordinated by Bird Count India, participants counted birds from a particular location.
Over 3000 birders uploaded 41,694 checklists and recorded 1,017 species, which is 75% of the total number of species known to occur in the country. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands recorded four new species in the top five namely the Andaman coucal, red-whiskered bulbul, white-throated kingfisher, and brown shrike.
