Delhi ‘Real Time Source Apportionment Supersite’

Every year, the National Capital suffers from intense air pollution from late October due to stubble burning, seasonal factors, etc. The pollution is due to haze, Particulate Matter, and smoke. The weather improves and the pollution levels decrease by March – April. To fight against pollution the Chief Minister of Delhi Mr. Arvind Kejriwal launched the Real Time Source Apportionment Supersite.

What is Real–Time Source Apportionment Supersite?

A mobile van will identify pollution hotspots in the National Capital. It will provide this information on an hourly basis. Getting real-time information about the sources of air pollution will help the Delhi Government tackle air pollution.

The data collected by the van in a day are as follows:

At 8 AM, the pollution levels were as follows:
- Pollution due to outside sources: 8%
- Vehicular Pollution: 35%
- Biomass burning: 29%
At 10 AM, the pollution levels were as follows:
- Outside sources: 29%
- Biomass burning: 0%
- Vehicular Pollution: 35%

What is biomass burning pollution in Delhi?

The security personnel, drivers, and several other street workers burn the biomass during winter to keep themselves warm. The carbon dioxide and smoke from the burning biomass pollute the city. Though, the level of pollution caused by biomass burning looks less, the impacts are big.
