The prehistoric hand axe in India was discovered in 1863 by British geologist Bruce Foote at Attirampakkam near Chennai (formerly Madras). This discovery provided evidence of early human settlements and cultures existing in the Indian subcontinent during the stone ages. Attirampakkam is one of the richest Paleolithic sites in India spanning cultures from Acheulian to Microlithic. Several hand axes made of quartzite have been found here indicating developed tool-making skills.
