The Portuguese were the first Europeans to set up sea trade centres in India. Vasco da Gama led the first successful voyage to India in 1498. He arrived at Calicut, now in Kerala. The Portuguese established their first European trading centre at Kollam, Kerala which marks the beginning of colonial era in India in 1502.
