Most of Jharkhand's iron ore occurs in Dharwad rocks, especially within the Singhbhum Craton. These Archean-Proterozoic formations contain Banded Iron Formations such as cherty and shaly types in the Koira Basin. The rocks formed through hydrothermal processes and desilicification, where magnetite alters to martite and hematite. The Singhbhum Granite and Older Metamorphics form the basement in this region. Kudappa and Deccan rock types are not found in Jharkhand, and Vindhyan rocks lack significant iron ore deposits here.
