Jan Aushadhi Diwas is observed every year on 7 March in India to promote the use of affordable generic medicines. The day spreads awareness about the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana, which provides quality medicines at low cost. Under this scheme, special pharmacies called Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendra sell generic medicines for diseases like diabetes, hypertension and infections. Generic medicines under the scheme are 50–90% cheaper than branded medicines, helping reduce healthcare expenses. By 2025, around 18,000 Janaushadhi Kendras were operating across India, serving nearly 10 lakh people daily.
