On the ruins of Seljuk Empire, arose two Empires- Khwarizmi Empire and Ghurid Empire- in Central Asia. Delhi Sultanate was an offshoot of the Ghurid Empire. When, Khwarizmi Empire defeated the Ghurids, it seemed that its next target would be the Delhi Sultanate for the boundary of Khwarizmi Empire had reached the Indus River. But, before this could happen, Khwarizmi Empire was destroyed by the mighty Mongol chief, Changez Khan. The Mongol threat to India appeared in 1221 CE. After the defeat of the Khwarizmi ruler, the crown prince, Jalaludin sought refuge in India. Giving him refuge would have meant inviting the ire of Changez Khan, who was loitering near the Indus River. So, Iltutmish politely refused the asylum request of Jalaludin in order to appease Changez Khan. It is difficult to say what would have happened if Changez had decided to invade India.
