While highlighting the efforts of International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) towards nuclear non-proliferation, critically discuss why India refused to take part in negotiations on its text.
The very efforts of International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) highlighted the fact that a vibrant civil society organization like ICAN might manifest an international treaty to ban nuclear arsenal.
India, like P5 nations and nations under a nuclear umbrella, refused to take part in negotiations that led to nuclear ban treaty and its obligation as it is not universal legal binding law emancipated from United Nation Convention on Disarmament which is the only authorized body to fuel stepwise nuclear disarmament process.
India is in favor of stepwise universal nuclear disarmament binding law which is accepted by all nations which forbid not the only deterrent use of nuclear arsenal but also make it an illegal entity to use. Such legal sanctity cannot be assured by a treaty and it’s negotiations process which is not accepted by all nations in one go.
