Six Years of Swachh Bharat Mission to be celebrated on Gandhi Jayanti

On October 2, 2020, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is to celebrate six years if Swachh Bharat Mission. The programme was launched on birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi (October 2). The mission was launched from Rajghat on October 2, 2014 to achieve the aim of “Clean India” by October 2, 2019 when the country celebrated 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.


The day that also marks the 151st birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi will focus on the following celebrations

  • A GIS portal is to be released that will showcase innovative practices to implement Sewage Waste Management
  • A Document on response of Indian cities towards COVID-19 will be released. The document will focus on sanitation.


The following are the achievement made by the mission in the last six years

  • Around 4,327 Urban Local Bodies have been declared Open Defecation Free under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban
  • Around 66 lakh individual household toilets were constructed and over 6 lakh community or public toilets were completed under the mission
  • Around 59,900 toilets across 2,900 cities were made live on Google maps
  • Over 97% of wards received complete door-to-door collection under Sewage Waste Management
  • Over 77% of wards now hold source segregation of waste.
  • Today more than 67% of total waste generated are being processed. This has increased by four times as compared to 2014. During 2014, it was merely 18%.
  • The cities such as Indore, Ambikapur, Navi Mumbai, Rajkot, Mysore and Surat were rated as five-star cities under the mission for their best performance. Around 86 cities were rated as 3-star cities and 64 cities were rated as 1-star cities. The rating was provided according to the protocol of Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs
  • Around 84,000 informal waste pickers have been integrated into the mainstream.
  • Over 5.5 lakh sanitation workers have been linked to various welfare schemes
  • More than 150 workshops were conducted focusing on capacity building with more than 6,000 officials participating from over 3,200 Urban Local Bodies.
