Notes:
The birth anniversary of the poet Kanakadasa is celebrated in Karnataka as ‘Kanakadasa Jayanthi’. His contributions to the field of Carnatic Music in the Kannada language is immense. He was born in the year 1509. Celebrations on the day take place mainly in Bengaluru, Mysore and Udupi regions. The day is celebrated on the eighteenth day of the Karthik month of the Hindu Calendar.

Notes:
The Veera Rani Abbakka Utsava (January 2023) is an annual festival held in honor of Rani Abbakka Chowta, the first Tuluva Queen of Ullal. The festival is a two-day event that includes a colorful procession.
Rani Abbakka Chowta was born in 1525. She was a member of the Chowta dynasty, which ruled over parts of coastal Karnataka. She fought against Portuguese colonization by leading a guerrilla army, forming alliances, and eliminating the Portuguese admiral.
The festival includes an award given to women who have made significant achievements in research and culture. The award also considers language, tradition, and motherhood. The Indian Navy has also named a coastal patrol vessel after Rani Abbakka Chowta.

Notes:
Sharavathi estuary in Karnataka, is a nesting site for Olive Ridley turtles. The estuary is made up of seven rivers that meet the Arabian Sea at Tonka Beach in Honavar. The estuary is known for its biodiversity of marine species.  The Sharavathi estuary is one of four major estuaries in the Uttara Kannada District. The other estuaries are: Kali, Gangavali, Aghanashini.  Olive Ridley turtles nest on the beaches of the Sharavathi estuary. The turtles lay hundreds of eggs, and after an incubation period of around two months, the tiny turtles head back to the sea

Karnataka government was planning to include Lakkundi in the proposed Hampi Tourism Circuit. Hampi is a city in the Vijayanagara district along the Tungabhadra River in the east and center part of the state. Hampi is famous for hosting the Hampi Group of Monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lakkundi is a village in the Gadag District of Karnataka and was once a major city before the 14th century. It was an important economic and commerce center for South India, with mint operations. It was also known as an agrahara, or a place of higher learning. It has over 50 ancient temples, 101 stepped wells, and many inscriptions built during the rule of the Chalukyas, Kalachuris, Seuna, and Hoysalas. Lakkundi is also considered an important site to understand the Vesara style of architecture, which combines the Nagara and Dravidian styles.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai announced that the state government would release Rs 5 crore for the development of Balligavi, the birthplace of Allama Prabhu, the first President of Anubhava Mantapa and Vachana poet of the 12th century.

St. Andrew’s Church in Bengaluru holds significant historical importance as it was the place where J T William Joseph, a notable figure in the Western classical music scene of the city, played his last notes on the pipe organ. The church continues to honor his legacy by hosting musical evenings, celebrating his contributions to the music culture in Bengaluru.

The terracotta figurines discovered at the Mudukonaje Megalithic site are significant as they offer insights into the religious practices of ancient times, specifically the Bootha Cult or Daiva Aradhane, prevalent in Coastal Karnataka. These figurines, including representations of animals and deities, highlight the cultural and spiritual life of the region’s past inhabitants, underscoring their beliefs and rituals.

Manne, originally known as Manyapura, served as the second capital of the Western Gangas, a dynasty that ruled southern Karnataka from 350 to 1000 CE. The village, now part of Nelamangala taluk, is historically significant with remnants of temples dating back to the Ganga period. The name reflects its rich past and cultural heritage, emphasizing its importance in Karnataka’s history.
