Kohbar (Khovar) and Sohrai paintings are traditional tribal wall arts from Hazaribagh district, Jharkhand, created mainly by married women. These arts are transmitted from mother to daughter and use natural earth colors like red ochre, yellow ochre, black manganese, and white clay. Khovar is associated with marriage rituals, decorating nuptial chambers, while Sohrai is linked to the post-harvest festival following Diwali. These art forms date back to Paleolithic cave paintings and received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2020.
