Jamshedji Tata founded Tata Iron and Steel Company in 1907 at Sakchi (now Jamshedpur), Jharkhand. He initiated prospecting and capital raising after iron ore deposits were identified in 1903. Though Jamshedji died in 1904, his son Dorabji Tata carried forward the project. The company began pig iron production in 1911 and steel production in 1912. By 1939, TISCO was the largest steel plant within the British Empire.
