Carbon dioxide was first identified in the early 17th century by Flemish chemist Jan Baptist van Helmont, who discovered it as a "gas sylvestre" or "wild gas" produced by burning charcoal. It was later formally studied by Scottish chemist Joseph Black in the 1750s, who named it "fixed air" and identified it as a distinct compound.
