Captain William Hawkins was a representative of the English East India Company. He was the commander of the first company ship to anchor at Surat named Hector. He reached in India on 24 August 1608 and went to the court of Emperor Jahangir in 1609. The emperor granted a commission for an English factory at Surat but later revoked under the Pressure of the Portuguese.
