Gujarat Assembly passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill on 24 March 2026 after long debate. The bill was introduced by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel based on a state panel report. Gujarat became the second state after Uttarakhand (2024) to adopt UCC. It creates a common law for marriage, divorce, succession, and live-in relationships for all religions. It makes registration of live-in relationships mandatory and defines their termination rules. It prohibits bigamy, allowing marriage only if no spouse is living. It applies to Gujarat residents, including those living outside the state. It excludes Scheduled Tribes (STs) and groups with protected customary rights.
