These are generally classified with the lampreys into the superclass Agnatha (jawless vertebrates) within the subphylum Vertebrata. All other living fishes (shark, rays, chimeras and bony fishes) possess true jaws derived from gill arches and are placed in the superclass Gnathostomata.
