Muhammad bin Tughlaq
In 1330 A.D., Delhi Sultan Muhammad bin Tughluq issued token currency in brass and copper, valued like gold and silver. Lacking design and security, these coins were widely forged. Inspired by the Chinese Yuan dynasty's paper currency, the scheme failed, causing economic turmoil and leading to its withdrawal. This was an early attempt at fiat money in medieval India, illustrating implementation challenges.
