Red soil covers about 40% to 50% of Karnataka's geographical area. It originates from weathering of ancient crystalline igneous and metamorphic rocks such as granites and gneisses. The red color is due to iron oxides present in the soil. This soil type is widespread especially in northern and eastern Karnataka. It has low nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic matter content but responds well to irrigation and fertilizers. Crops like ragi, pulses, and oilseeds are commonly grown on red soil in Karnataka.
