He received the 1996 World Food Prize for his achievements in enlarging and improving the global supply of rice during a time of exponential population growth. But in actual, the properties of IR8 was first discovered by a 29-year-old Indian farmer called Nekkanti Subba Rao when he planted it for the first time on his field in Andhra Pradesh.
