Notes: Karanmai referred to right to cultivate during the Chola period. These were further divided into two types— Kudi Nikki which means a situation in which people previously settled in the village were either removed or deprived of their rights; and Kudi Ninga which refers to a situaton in which such people were not to be disturbed.
