West Singhbhum is Jharkhand's largest iron ore producer. Mining in Singhbhum started in 1904. The district has key sites like Noamundi and Gua. It contributes 29% of India's hematite deposits. Jharkhand holds 25% of India's iron ore reserves and produces over 14% of the country's iron ore. Magnetite is found in Palamu but West Singhbhum dominates in production. Giridih and Chatra do not have major iron ore mines.
