Partition in 1947 split jute cultivation, mainly in East Pakistan, from Indian jute mills in West Bengal. Around 81% of jute-growing areas went to Pakistan. Cotton supplies were also disrupted as irrigated growing areas in canal colonies became part of Pakistan, while Indian mills lost access. Jute and cotton industries faced acute raw material shortages after 1947.
