Simdega district in Jharkhand was historically called Biru Kaishalpur Pargana. It was ruled by Raja Katangadeo. After his death, Maharaja Shivakarna controlled the region. The Munda and Kharia tribes settled there in 1441 AD, followed by the Oraon tribe in 1503 AD. In 1336 AD, Harideo of the Gang Dynasty was appointed king of Biru. The royal family’s descendants live near Birugarh village, close to the current district headquarters.
