Chauri Chaura incident occurred on February 4, 1922 in the town of Chauri Chaura, which is located in the Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh, India. The incident involved a large group of protesters who were participating in the Non-cooperation movement. The protesters clashed with police, who opened fire. The violence resulted in the deaths of 22 policemen and 3 civilians. The Non-cooperation movement was organized by Mahatma Gandhi in an attempt to convince the British government to grant self-government to India. The movement took place from 1920–22. As a result of the Chauri Chaura incident, Gandhi called off the movement on February 12, 1922.
