The Bokaro Steel Plant was established with assistance from the Soviet Union. It was conceptualized in 1965 and began operations in 1972 with Soviet financing and technical aid. This plant is India's fourth integrated steel plant in the public sector. Prior Indian steel plants included Rourkela supported by West Germany, Bhilai by the Soviet Union, and Durgapur by the UK.
