In October 2025, Chennai, Tamil Nadu (TN) became the first city in India to fully operationalize the Real-Time Flood Forecasting and Spatial Decision Support System (RTFF & SDSS). The system predicts and manages urban floods using data from Automatic Rain Gauges (ARGs), Automatic Weather Stations (AWS), Automatic Water Level Recorders (AWLRs), and Gate Sensors (GS). It covers 4,974 sq km, including Chennai and nearby districts, focusing on Adyar, Cooum, Kosasthalaiyar, and Kovalam river sub-basins. The project was funded by the World Bank (WB) under the Project Development Grant Fund (PDGF) and managed by Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited (TNUIFSL).
