The 9th International Santal Conference was held in Darjeeling, West Bengal on 7 March 2026. The conference focused on preservation of Santal language, culture, traditions and tribal heritage while encouraging social and economic development. It highlighted the historic struggles of the Santal community against exploitation, including the Santal Hul uprising of 1855. The event also recalled that the Santali language was included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India in 2003. It recognised the Ol Chiki script, invented in 1925, which helped strengthen Santali literature and cultural expression.
